If you are looking for a truly exciting family holiday experience amidst some of the world’s most stunning scenery then Western USA with its great national parks has plenty to offer.
Las Vegas may not instantly strike you as being child-friendly but it does embrace families and keeps the little ones happy whilst the adults are definitely entertained. Beyond Las Vegas is the spectacular scenery of The Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.
Los Angeles is the place to head for star-spotting and shopping. You could spend a couple of days at Disneyland and then head for the excellent beaches. The white sands of Santa Monica are our favourite Los Angeles beach destination, but the sunshine fun doesn’t stop there with equally welcoming beaches nearby. When you’re tired of the beach, head into Los Angeles and its dazzling fast pace or head for the amusement parks – there are almost too many to choose from!
San Francisco is one of our favourite cities so take a cable car, snap the Golden Gate Bridge and top off with a visit to Alcatraz (we recommend booking this well in advance as it’s practically impossible to just turn up and secure a ticket).
Further south, we recommend San Diego for its beaches and its world-class zoo and once you are fully relaxed you could try hiking through the desert scenery of Palm Springs. For wine buffs the Sonoma and Napa Valleys have some outstanding vineyards. Western USA truly offers a melting pot of experiences for the adventurous travelling family.
A fly-drive is a great option especially if you are looking for a twin centre family holiday or wish to add diversity to your break. The coastal road between San Francisco and Los Angeles is fabulous and can be driven in a day (but why rush it?).
