Sussex & Kent
The counties of West Sussex, East Sussex and Kent offer mile after mile of coastline stretching halfway along the south coast of England and around the south eastern corner, with plenty to offer the most discerning family holiday.
The combined Sussex counties run from the historical walled city of Chichester, famed for its designer shops and medieval history, through Brighton - reputed to be 'the birthplace of the seaside' - and eastwards to Hastings and its beautifully restored pier.
Sussex is steeped in history and you won't have to travel far to find a place of historical importance, the magnificent Arundel Castle being well worth a visit. Of course, time hasn't stood still and Brighton is cosmopolitan and lively and Fort Fun & Rocky's Adventure Park (near Eastbourne) offers plenty for older children and thrill-seekers! Knockhatch Adventure Park, near Hailsham, offers similar fun for younger children.
Bognor Regis, thriving and with a Blue Flag award for the Bognor Regis East beach, is very much a traditional English seaside resort and the nearby villages offer a warm and more tranquil welcome than their lively neighbour. It is also home to the Butlins entertainment resort, the largest holiday centre in the south of England, with its new flagship Shoreline Hotel.
The "Garden of England" county of Kent is blessed with 9 Blue Flag beaches stretched out around its coastline and its resorts are within easy reach of London by road or rail. Attractions in Kent include Diggerland near Strood, where adults and children can operate real JCB machinery, the castles at Leeds and Hever with their mazes and the historic city of Canterbury. France is just a short hop away if you fancy a change of country!
